The World Bank Transportation and ICT group works with local contractors in Southwestern China to capture imagery for a rural accessibility project. The contractors are required to use the Mapillary app as they drive the road network, so the World Bank team in Washington DC can evaluate the environment and road conditions remotely. As development work progresses and more images are uploadd, The World Bank can use Mapillary’s comparison feature to observe changes over time.

VicRoads, the transportation authority of the state of Victoria, Australia, surveys its 22,500 kilometer road network every two years. With a professional grade ARRB (https://www.arrb.com.au/home.aspx) rig, VicRoads is able to capture information about road quality, surfacing, reflectivity, and more. As part of an open data effort, Mapillary imported terabytes of VicRoads' imagery data, processed it and made it available through a web viewer for easy access and distribution.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Works uses Mapillary to keep its database of traffic signs updated across 3,200 miles of road. Road inspectors drive out every month to check for broken or vandalized signs, but full inventory is only conducted once every one or two years. With Mapillary, inspectors capture road views as they drive out each month. Images are uploaded to Mapillary directly after each drive and traffic sign data is automatically extracted within hours.

In preparation for Chicago River Day in May 2017, the Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council worked with WSP-Parsons Brinckerhoff to capture 360 imagery of the length of the Chicago River. The images are available on Mapillary.com for easy viewing and device, and can be downloaded by citizens, agencies, and other cities for any use.

The City of Johns Creek uses Mapillary for traffic sign inventory. As a side benefit, the GIS team found that the collected imagery was useful for showcasing transportation projects that were up for votes. The GIS team created an ArcGIS Story Map to give citizens a way to navigate through the photos.
